Depending Upon How Your Boss And Co-Workers Feel Concerning Sausage, This May Not Be Safe For Work

MY WIFE and I like to do fun little things to make our lives more interesting. I've told you about some of them - Quirky Shopping Lists, Pizza Races, and Jimmy Fund Shopping, for instance. We like diversions from the humdrum.

One of the things we do, which I don't believe I've gone into detail about, is matching our meals to what we'll be viewing on TV.

I've lived with MY WIFE for such a long time that I truly don't know if that sounds insane. In any case, it's perfectly normal behavior for us. If we're planning on watching, say, a Jack Lemmon movie, then we'll try to make our entire dinner have something to do with lemons. We'll have lemonade to drink. We'll have lemon veal piccata for our main dish. For dessert, we'll have lemon meringue pie. You get the idea.

Sometimes, this sort of thing is more easily accomplished than others. Take the Super Bowl. Every year, we try to have regional dishes from the cities represented. When the Chicago Bears were in it a few years back, we made our own Chicago-style hot dogs. That was easy enough, but Indianapolis was in that same Super Bowl. Can you come up with a food associated with Indianapolis? We couldn't. It was a serious stumper. We asked around, and finally were told of something called a sugar cream pie. I found a recipe and made it. Damned good it was, too, and went surprisingly well with frankfurters covered in peppers, tomatoes, celery salt, onions, mustard, relish, and pickles. Well... on the intake, anyway.

As I say, sometimes easier sometimes, somewhat harder others. Rashoman or Seven Samurai? Well, DUH! Sushi! The season-ending episode of House? Easy choice, but not so easy to find around here: Blood Pudding!

So, that's what we sometimes do, match the food to the occasion.

Sometimes, a visual presentation is the most important thing.

A couple of days ago, we watched The Aristocrats.

You're probably assuming we had spotted dick for dessert, but we felt that would have been redundant. We had whoopie pies.

Soon, with less wurst stuff.

What, exactly, was that surrounding the "wurst" anyway? Supposedly, my great-grandmother used to make blood pudding, apparently a Swedish delicacy of sorts, made on butchering days. Go figure, huh?
Wanna share the recipe for the pie representing Indianapolis?
Happy eating too!

That is an amazing thing! I never heard anyone matching foods with tv shows. But I like it.

Sigh. You are the only person I know who would post a picture of naughty "dogs." Sometimes, I worry about you.

The contents, to be clear, are a rather dirty-looking sausage, meatBALLS, and FRENCH green beans (doing duty as green hair.) There's a chicken BREAST lurking above the whole thing, although if it were anatomically correct, it would be up about 18" higher.

Yes, whatever you're thinking about me at the moment is about right.

This is the reason you received an award from me. I feel I'm watching an episode of John Stewart every time I drop in.

Now, this truly is a high-brow crowd --matching meals with entertainment! LOL. Fantastic! Always enjoy writing about good food...Try matching your food to your novel reading...most enlightening...the fantasy writer, Brian Jacques and his "Redwall" series are particularly inspiring in the culinary department :-) Happy gourmet cooking...

The judges' score on this concept:

HUMOR: 8.5
CREATIVITY: 9.5
ORIGINALITY: 10.0
TASTE: 1.5

In short, the usual Suldog results.

Even with warning the laughter brought coworkers lurking... I'm good with that minimize thing. Phew! It seems I cannot come here without laughing that way.

Now those are TV diners! Big smile.

I wasn't familiar with the movie, or the term (I had to click through and I must say it is still a bit of a mystery), but I do want to say that I don't think you and YOUR WIFE are insane in the least! I think you go out of your way to make the everyday FUN! And that is why we all keep coming back. Me anyway!

Matching food to what you're watching does sound insane. But then you are insane so...

Actually though, it sounds no more insane to an outsider than some of the things Mr. Jazz and I do after 20 years.

But damn! I have to fix my food like that sometime!!

OH, wow. The Sopranos is easy. Not pizza but Wild Thing's all time favorite: Spaghetti.
I like Law and Order reruns, but I really can't afford State Dinners. So I settle for hot dogs. In honor of Lenny.
I love Zulu, but i'm damned if I'm going to go shoot an Impala for dinner.

Now I've gotta figure more things out. Thanks Sul. Maybe I should send you a list of our favorites films?

I laughed out loud when I saw this picture! Thanks for making my afternoon.
By the way, the Japanese serve a similar dish in bars (to men only). It is called "I went". You can figure it out. They use the same ingredients, except with strategically placed mayonnaise.

bwahahahahaha!!! you and your wife should have been here a couple years ago when we had belly button night at our house.

don't know if you're familiar with veggie tales videos or not (kids vids) but they are smartly done with enough humor to make the grownups smile. friends had one that had on it a bit of music called "the belly button song." i just so happen to make a recipe called belly button cake. and so an evening was born. they brought the video over. i made tortellini (which is said to be shaped after the venus de milo's bellybutton), served navel oranges, and made bellybutton for dessert. we took pictures of each other's bellybuttons and had a fine time.

and may i say, i will never look at french green beans the same way again. LOL

What Chris said!

I'm at a loss as to how I'd prepare a play-off meal, but I dang well know what there would be to drink... Labatts, and LOTS of it. ;-)

Have you ever had blood pudding? I do not recommend it, felt dry and tasted kind of vile. Though to each their own I guess right? Next time you're going for the English dish try some bangers & mash. You could even take the same picture ;-)

Oh & we had a themed wedding shower because our house was under consctuction at the time & we registered at Home Depot -- screwdrivers & harvey wallbangers for drinks and everything was served in paint trays, flower pots & we even used a drywall knife to slice the bread. Themed food is so much fun!

You couldn't fail to catch my eye with that picture! I put off coming over for fear of what I might find but it was no use, I just HAD to see what you'd cooked up this time. I'm glad I did. And thanks for pointing out the anatomical details.....I was wondering.

I don't think you and YOUR WIFE are insane. Haven't you heard the saying "The family that plays with its food together, stays together"?

And I was so pleased to discover that there is a trace of Scottish blood in you. Just think, without it, you and this blog would not exist. We have a lot to answer for.

Great post... always good to start the day with a giggle...thank you.
Interesting concept - and says a lot about how you keep your relationship fresh!
As a minor cook myself... may i say your green beans are a tad over cooked!
I thought they were onions lol which would have done the job as well :)

OK, now I'm really sad that I disappointed you with the pathetic peep show. You need some help, Suldog. And some alternative food...maybe.

Cath said...

Only you, truly, only you could make a phallic symbol from food.
Really!

Yep... that kind of goes beyond what I would call "beautiful madness"....... take care and get well soon :-)

laughing best wishes Ribbon

LOL, as always.

What a clever idea to match your viewing to your eating pleasure; you and YOUR WIFE are very creative indeed. Great post.

Um, is that some kind of cold sore running up the "nose"? A bit too much aristocratic activity for that dish, it would seem.

Heh. Have you met Donna from My Tasty Treasures? She plays with food, too. You'll have to go to the bottom of the post to see her version of The Aristocrats...

If I admit to wanting a wiener right now, does that make me gay?

We are SO going to have to do the food theme night. Too fun!

Does that make me insane, too?
