Box Scores

Those of you unfamiliar with my work concerning the M Street Softball League (MSSL) may not get a lot out of this. I'll give you a quick explanation and then you can decide to stick around or not.

The MSSL is a very good fast-pitch softball league. Based in South Boston, it has been around since 1970. That's 48 seasons.

For the first 45 seasons, it was probably THE best fast-pitch league in New England. At that time, the style of play was "sling" or "open modified", which basically meant the pitchers could throw any way they wanted aside from overhand or full windmill. The pitchers who plied their trade at M Street were brutally good. Games were often of the 2 - 1 or 4 - 3 variety, with no-hitters happening once in a while. The league record for strikeouts in a game? 20 - in a seven-inning game wherein only 21 outs total were available.

It is now "modified fast-pitch", which puts a few more restrictions on the pitching delivery and makes it more of a hitter's game. Still, good pitching and defense will win more often than not and the level of play is still high. Some of the best players in the state of Massachusetts - and beyond - come to M Street to play.

I came into the league at age 42 and played in a total of 13 seasons, mostly prior to the change to "modified" pitching. I held my own. I was never a star, by any means, but I usually didn't kill my team, either. Now, I’m 61 and for the past four seasons I have been the league's official scorekeeper, as well as an occasional umpire. I am paid to compile statistics, publish them on the website, write a weekly column recapping the action, and so forth.

There have recently been a few minor problems with getting everything published on the website. My final column of the year, although published with text, didn't contain box scores of the championship finals. I'm publishing it all here so that the players who took part can perhaps print them out and have them as a memento.

That's about it. These are just the box scores, with no text. It's for the players at M Street, but if you find it enjoyable, great.

City Tap House wins.

THURSDAY, September 20th

Game 4, “A”, is unavailable in box score format. I have been unable to figure out why the box score I put together for this one won't publish correctly. I'll just note that Mike Selig of Southside had three home runs in his team's deciding victory.

Southside Tavern wins.

To all the players: Thank you for taking part in our league. I look forward to seeing you again soon.
