One Year After

The 15th of this month was the one year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Jeff Bauman (survivor) & Carlos Aredondo (in cowboy hat - rescuer)

Today, the 19th, was when Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the remaining living suspect, was captured in Watertown.

My piece in the Boston Herald today looks back on that time. As always, your kind comments at the website (or in a letter to the editor) are warmly appreciated.

The first marathon since that cowardly act of terror will take place on Monday.
The second will take place next year, the third will be the year after, and so on.
Cowardly terrorists took lives.
Cowardly terrorists destroyed limbs.
They were no match for Boston.
Boston was stronger.
Always will be.

Cowardly terrorists were no match for these guys.

Cowardly terrorists were no match for Watertown.
This was Mount Auburn Street after the capture.
We let those who made the capture know that we appreciated it.

Lives were lost.
Lives were fucked up in ways most of us can't even imagine.
Please say a prayer for all affected, and please enjoy the Boston Marathon.
This year it is a memorial, but it is also a celebration of life going on despite what some miserable excuses for human beings did last year.
Thank you for stopping by. Once again, my piece is at the Herald website. God bless.

Some pretty graphic reminders of that horrible time. I was able to comment at the Herald without any trouble this time.

Thanks for this, Jim. I still have trouble wrapping my head around the idea of stuff like this happening in your back yard.

And of the raging impotence that thinks killing 8-year-old boys is making a great statement. . .

My comment:

Most interesting comments. I tend to fall in with the "practicing for martial law" crowd.

That said, this is a good piece.

Always a good read here.

Yes....... it was a terrible act. Good often comes out of these awful things and bravery of the survivors is stronger and has an impact.

Can't believe the case won't be in court until November.

I remember well the day and I remember you writing about it while the police knocked on doors in your neighborhood. It touched you so much more closely than us, but we will never forget.

All I can say is Amen and God bless all who were touched by this horror. I agree, we will never forget, no matter how far across the country we are. You go Boston!

They indded are cowards and the scum of the earth!

And of course on the side of light, there are many brave people about - the rescuers and the victims.

Visiting reprosectively, Jim, but I remember watching the TV news in absolute horror last year.

I was offered a spot this year. I declined, but what an honor. I did have a friend who ran... he did amazing. I think the best part is all the regular people stories that have emerged, those who collapsed and were carried across on Monday, the 75 year old last finisher, etc.

We are all strong my friend... regardless of where we are from. But I have to think that event made us here, stronger to the core.

Tony gets the Herald every day... I shall look for you. :)
