I Appear To Be Non-Existent

Today, this was said by the federal government.

Unemployment Rate Unchanged

*Sigh*

I would have thought a big deal such as myself losing his job would have upped the figure at least a little bit.

OK, that was my attempt at humor. Now for something a bit more uplifting.

I now have prospects. Two semi-offers of employment have come my way. I say "semi-offers" because they are of the "Let me see what I can do for you, Jim, and I'll get back to you" school. Both are from decent people, though, and I trust their good intent.

I am expecting a phone call regarding one. The call may not come today, but I have absolute faith that it will come fairly soon. We're looking at a position as a fact-checker for a magazine there. If I land such a job, I might actually learn something while doing it. That would be novel.

The other has a person asking around for me, at his place of employment, about an actual job involving writing. He likes my writing, likes me, and feels I'd be a good person to do... well, it would likely be reporting, and that could be fun and interesting.

So, the outlook is better today than yesterday. The only question I have, since my being fired didn't affect the unemployment rate, is whether or not my being hired for something will have any effect. Probably not, other than to make the world at-large mumble stuff under its breath.

Soon, with more better stuff?

For you, in writing, wonderful! I will send a prayer your way.

Hey, good news indeed Jim. If it turns out to be a fact checker covering the political beat you'll be mighty busy. Good luck! ;)

There is something very, I dunno, 'Zen', about your own personal unemployment leaving the national rate 'unchanged', isn't there? Drops of water in the ocean, or something like that. . . What is the sound of one hand being unemployed?

I knew that prospects would come flowing your way; the speed at which they are arriving is heartening. I'll just say, once more for effect, that the last time I was 'between jobs', I actually wished I had taken a couple more weeks off in the interim, just to relax and clear my head before marching back into the salt mines. . .

I'm so happy that such great sounding jobs have already sort of been offered to you. Yippeeeeee!!!! No worries about being a 'bad blogfriend'. I'm the worst of the worst and I do know that you have other things on your mind right now.
Big hug from moi :-)

Fingers crossed on the writting job...i'm sure you can write better than "annonomous" your first commentor.

@Anonymous - Huh?

Now that I got that out of the way....
I have a feeling you are going to land on your feet, Jim, and whatever you find... or is sent your way... will be at least as enjoyable as the last 20 years.
Just remember the Herm Albright quote.

Craig is right .. take a few days or even a week or two to just relax before diving back into the deep end ... and i will be keeping good vibes headed your way cause i know you wont relax til you get reemployed

"unωell unquestіonably сome more formerly again aѕ еxaсtly the samе nеarly very оftеn insiԁe сase yоu ѕhiеlԁ thiѕ hike" ??huh??
I smile...for several reasons, Jim.
The prospect of a job certainly is reason for smiles.
Warmest hugs,

Your situation not affecting the unemployment rate reminds me of "All Quiet on the Western Front." Be sure to keep your eyes open but your head down. I'll keep my fingers crossed that one of these job possibilities pans out.

Kat said...

My, you work fast! They both sound very promising, too. Yay!
Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you!

Karen said...

That's great!

Great to hear!! Keep us posted and keep your head high! Oh wait - I just cancelled out Stephen's 'eyes open head down' charge. Try up AND down for "Heck yes, I'm the man for the job!" Wishing you well!

BTW - you CAN turn off Anonymous commenters ability to post comments if you so choose. Unless you like to be thoroughly dazed and confused after reading them! Food for thought!

I just delete comments from nutjobs, especially if they contain links. Fortunately, there are very few people reading in my corner of the internet, so it's rare.

I know you'll find something that suits you, and that you'll be amazing at it.

It's pretty frustrating to hear the latest "facts" as handed down by the US Gov... I do not personally know a single person who believes the stuff they put out. It's all crap, lies, more crap, misdirection and crap. Also, it's crap.

Hope your portion of crap will be over soon and you'll be crapless?
You're welcome. I think.

So, i need to pray one of them works out -- preferably the one you'd like best.

There was a mistake; you should call the feds and tell them to add one. I wonder if the mistake will continue after you are employed this month. All the best!

The first thing **I'd** fact-check were I you would be that unemployment rate, assuming you get that job.

Prospects are great good things, offers are that much better! You go!

Suldog said...

Friends - I would have deleted the nutjob's comment, as I usually do, but so many people have commented on it, it would make THEM look like nutjobs if I removed it. I don't want my friends to look like nutjobs, so it stays this time.

Thumbs up and fingers crossed concerning the job offers. Hope things pan out for you!

i hear ya. the week i lost my job the reports were..."unemployment numbers improve....the economy is picking up." that seemed like cruel irony.

so glad to hear some friends are looking into possibilities for you. hoping for the best.

Jeni said...

See, someone else in the Blogosphere besides me thinks you're a great writer too! And, you are that so don't forget it and don't let it go to your head too fast either though. LOL Maybe I should get your friends to snoop around for some job leads for me too now as they seem to be pretty adept in that line of work. Hope one of these leads pans out for you and hope it's the one you actually liked the better of the two, too!

As we expected of you, Jim, good things will flow. I hope you love your new opportunities and that they do come to fruition for you, as you deserve great and good things, a man like you, a warm and creative writer and soul - Unfortunately my mistletoe is now down, or else you'd be in for a big smacker, once again! xxx

They should have registered your unemployment in the figures by +1. Perhaps they have a load of incompetents working in the records office.

I think I mentioned I was unfortunate to experience 5 redundancies in my time - each time was like a knife twisting inside and therefore I can relate exactly how you feel. I think you would make an excellent creative writer, Jim, a career change might be just what you need right now. My very best wishes for a successful application for a post and may it come soon.

I rather like the "anonymous" comment. Gives me a good giggle on a grey cold morning.
As for jobs.... just keep plugging away... and write some articles for the local newspapers, doesn't matter if you get paid or not, just get your name out there.

If the sound of one hand clapping is a slap across the face, then surely the sound of one hand being unemployed is the sound of a fly being squished! =:]

I loved the spam comment. As they go, it was more ridiculous than usual and that is saying a lot!

I think that the writer position would be a dream come true for you. And the fact checking sounds quite interesting (and might be a dream come true for me were I to find such a job). Best of luck on both!

(not necessarily your) Uncle Skip said...

Yep... leave it as a monument to inanity.

I tried commenting on your other post about calling unemployment and hearing one of your pevious jobs, but we were travelling and I was on an iPad and it never went through!! ARGH!

Anyways, I was just going to say I agreed with another person who said she hoped WRITING was somewhere in your future job prospects and now it looks like it might be!!! Keep us posted, we are rooting you on here in NJ!

Having just caught up on your recent posts, I first want to say I can tell it was a shock for you to be let go at work. That is a long time to work somewhere and then receive the honor of being the one picked to let go. But you sound like you are landing on your feet and keeping an open mind about learning something new and stepping outside the box. This may turn out to be a good thing for you. Either way, you have your lovely wife and family and friends solidly in your corner. Best wishes to you for a new year of new interests and new workmates.

Seeing the title of this post, I can't help but find it hilarious that the first comment would be from a spammer. Good luck with the job possibilities!

Oh noooo! I am so sorry Sir Suldog! I truly am saddened to hear of your job loss. I have not been online very much, so I have not kept up with my blog reading.

However, you truly are a gifted and GREAT writer.

Have you thought of writing a novel?

I know it wouldn't bring in a paycheck right away, but maybe Obamacare will kick in and take care of the rest.

*whistles*

Yeah, I'm still waiting on that too.

HA!

Good luck to a very deserving guy! Yes, that would be you.

Both of those sound like great fun and you would do well. When I got laid off (actually I guess I was fired - they did away with my position entirely), it was right after my daughter was born. Apparently they had planned to do it all along, but waited until my six week (UNPAID) maternity leave was over before they told me. However, in my case, it was the best thing that could have happened. I personally hope you get the writing one, because the world needs you!!

Fingers, toes and eyes crossed for you, Jim.

Great news! Though I had no doubt its exactly what I'd be reading was that you were on it like Blue Bonnet.

Thanks for checking in with me over at my place btw. Not back to normal yet but I too have some prospect of good things to come on the horizon. Fingers crossed!

Good news, Jim, I hope it all works out. As you've said yourself, Things Get Better. And to quote my dear friend Anonymous, "The sketch is tasteful, your authored material stylish." Unfortunately, he mentioned nothing of the slively toves. May you continue to whiff through the tulgey wood 'til you rest by the Tumtum tree.

Sully,
I have been quietly following your blog despite stopping writing in my own for the past couple of years. After being away for the holidays, I was excited to catch up with my favourite people from the Internet... So sorry that this has happened to you - I know we've never met personally but I KNOW you are a great guy and deserve far better. (Like getting-season-tickets-to-every-ball-team-you-love type of better)

Will be crossing fingers and sending good wishes from snowy London Ontario. I truly believe that good things happen to good people and expect we'll be hearing about new adventures SOON. Happy New Year and take care of you :)
