Other Than An Overwhelming Desire To Hang Myself, It Was A Great Game
Sometime in the fourth quarter, NBC announcer Chris Collinsworth said, "We should just have these two teams play all the time!"
Even though I could have used a couple pounds of Prozac sprinkled over my Wheaties this morning, I agree. It was as good a football game as I've seen in years. That the team I wanted to win, didn't? It shouldn't detract from that fact. It had exciting plays, fascinating strategy, heroic players, and a nail-biting finish. Can't ask for much more.
Congratulations (again) to the New York Giants. They won, fair and square (again).
As for the bets I touted...
We had an excellent start. I suggested a bet on the Patriots to record the first sack in the game, and they got it. It worked exactly as I said it might. The Giants had the ball first, that was our edge as bettors, and it panned out. After that, though, it was all to the bad.
The Patriot's first play from scrimmage resulted in a safety. That screwed everything up for the wager concerning the game being decided by exactly three points. It also affected the possibility of there being a couple more field goal attempts (although, to be honest, not too much.) In any case, those two bets failed, as did the various total-score-by-each-team bets.
Bottom line for the day: - 300. On the bright side, that still leaves me with a total of +230 for the two years I've given you these bets. As in all investment opportunities, the overall return on investment is more important than any one outcome (he said, knowing full well he screwed the pooch yesterday.)
Since I will not be discussing football again until at least August or September, the following will be obviously true to those of you who hate football. The rest of you will have to take it on faith.
Soon, with more better stuff.

Great post.
(I say this after just hurling in my office waste basket)
You should be delighted that nobody sent you 10% of the winnings last time. Because that means that they can't expect you to give them 10% back this time ;-)
Sorry that your team lost.
I watched as much as I could, including Madonna during the halftime show. Since my team didn't play, the end results don't really matter to me. (she says while ducking a mystified/abused pooch). Maybe next year for your Pats.
The best part for this viewer is I had nothing vested in the outcome, having watched the Niners go down in flames two weeks ago, so I was able to concentrate much better on the commercials.
Toonman was on the edge of the couch almost the entire game and his BP was through the roof .. no gloating here .. as Jets fans (like my sister) know, there's always next year .. maybe Mrs Brady's fanily/friends didnt pray hard enough for Tommy?
Why should YOU want to hang yourself? YOU didn't drop an uncontested pass for a first down that might have salted the game away, did you?
Although if that WAS you, then you also recently married the HOOTERS bimbo -er, girl- of the year. So at least you'd have that.
I had absolutely NO plans to watch this game, but I did.
I was amazed! Found myself glued to the tube.
And that's so not me.
And I wasn't even that impressed with the commercials this year... except the Clint Eastwood one.
The rest? Meh.
But the last two minutes of this game... wowzah.
Even Madonna was fun.... and more importantly... IN TUNE!
She sounded great.
Sorry you lost. But at least it was a worthy loss.
After all the Super Bowls the Patriots have played in under Belichik, I wouldn't have expected them to be the ones dropping passes when the game was on the line. . .
But hey, Clint Eastwood was the highlight of the game, for me.
And what the heck, my team had already won, four hours before kickoff. . .
sorry about the pats. my son was not happy either.
I couldn't stay awake any longer and went to bed at 2.00 a.m. -- thinking well at least I can go to bed with the Pats in the lead. What surprised me was to discover that they didn't score again in the second half... Worst thing about watching the Superbowl in England is we don't get to see the commercials -- just endless boring talk back in the studio... Commiserations -- but at least my Dad in Heaven, by brother and my nephew are happy...
And of course you've heard of the, uh, poorly-endowed plastic surgeon who was so despondent that he hung himself. . .
(*ba-doomp!*)
Have to admit that after the game was over, I went to your previous blog to re-read the bets. I plodded through them and noted that the first couple were spot on. (Oh, I even noticed the color of the Gatorade being poured over the coach at the end of the game. I would have NEVER noticed that before. Thanks! :))
The game was intense. I was disappointed with most of the commercials and disappointed with the halftime show, but the game was great, to me. Have a restful week, my friend.
It was a good game, at least the last five minutes. If you're only going to watch one football game a year (like I do) then this wasn't a bad one to watch.
As in all investment opportunities, the overall return on investment is more important than any one outcome (he said, knowing full well he screwed the pooch yesterday.)
You sound like my broker, who is NOT EF Hutton.
Ahh. I almost feel guilty -- no interest in the Super Bowl or football, but did make and consume quite a bit of chili, which seems to be the meal of choice on Super Bowl Sunday. :-)

I am not so sure that the Giants won the game fair and square. Gisele's presence seems to have something to do with these big time losses. There is some kind of witchcraft thing going on. I can feel it.
Sorry the Pats lost, and hope they get the chance again next year.
I rooted for the Pats because of Patrick Chung, who did his job well. I missed Madonna while I ran to the store. Oh well.
The end was great... except for the outcome. In fact, I think it is very fitting that its the last game of the year.
I'm sorry about the ending, but you've got a great attitude. It was a pretty exciting game and I don't even usually watch the game!
Well... I watched all of it, but somehow missed the controversy in the halftime show. It must have been subtle. Where I'm from a middle finger has to be at the end of a fully extended arm before it has any real meaning.
The outcome might have been entirely different had Welker caught one more pass. Then again it would only have put the Pats that much closer to the end zone. c' est le jeu
I hate to say this (actually, I'm going to LOVE saying it), but I think the Patriots' run is officially over. Brady's not getting any younger, and there's only so far you can go in the NFL with a sub-par defense and no running game to speak of. If Brady isn't great, the Pats lose. Fortunately for you chowdah heads, he's great most of the time. Now, if they somehow manage to get a top notch RB, it changes everything.
Aw, at least you're a good sport - there's nothing worse tha a sore loser. There's always next year, eh?
Never, ever, do I watch a football game. For whatever reason, I watched the whole damn thing..and, I enjoyed it! Sorry bout your Pats, great game.
Well, since the 49ers lost, I was routing for the Patriot's.
I REALLY would have liked to see the 49ers in there! :)
The Giants daughter academy award nominee, a cancer survivor on their team and a father in the stands who is blind- I think the cards were stacked for the Giants Great Game
I cried into my martini over this loss...for about a minute or so. Mourning periods are necessary.
To ease the pain, I collected on the first two quarters (thanks to the 2 point safety), and also won the Final Score on our 'squares' bet. Not a bad haul, either!
So, with mixed emotions, this very intoxicated Patriots Fan made her way home with the help of 2 Giants fans, who took my congratulations as payment for the ride. It was a great win for them. Yes, it was.
xoxoxo, cd
