Monomaniacal Coughing Machine Has Rantings Published!

My head cold has left town, but only on a short journey. It has migrated to my throat and chest. I am now hacking like a barking seal.

This is a good thing, believe it or not. All of my colds follow this pattern. They start at the top of my head and move ever southward. When it reaches the final stages, I'll spare you the details.

Meanwhile, the Boston Herald has been bamboozled once again. Despite ample past evidence of my inadequacies, they have decided to see if they can sneak another one of my pieces past an unwitting public. This time, I am blathering about Lent, softball, and other things I ran through the wringer in this space 7 or 8 years ago. If you have a burning desire to numb your brain, you can find it THERE.

(As always, your kind comments may make them think I've actually done something worthwhile, so you might want to think twice before leaving any.)

Meanwhile, I am going to go breathe steam and hope what I'm coughing up aren't actual pieces of my lungs.

Soon, with more better stuff.

Congrats! *That's congrats for the published piece, not the barking like a seal from the congestion.*

I enjoyed your newspaper article. I'm a member of a Protestant denomination that observes Lent. It'a a meaningful season for us. Because I am older than dirt, I don't mess with my diet during Lent; I usually take ON something new that's good for me and my fellow man instead of giving up something.

Hope you get to feeling much better soon!

They're gonna want you back every day now

Hmmm. I have no need to lose weight, nor am I guilt-ridden, so the best feature of Lent, for me, is Fat Tuesday. "Next year, in N'Awlins!"

please take care of yourself ... you need to drink copious amounts of water to make sure you dont end up with pneumonia ... seriously

You can read my comment at the Herald because I'm too lazy to post anything here, too.

Good work! I do hate those upper respiratory devils and I know exactly what you are going through.

My colds are just like that. They might start anywhere - sinuses, throat, lungs - but before it's over, it will have spent time in all of 'em; sometimes my ears and even my eyes will join in the fun. And once in a while, it'll even go around for a second lap.

But that barking seal thing - been there, done that; and just a few days ago, since you mentioned it.

Gin. Lots of gin. (Except for the juniper taste, it's practically the same as water, isn't it?)

I hate that you're sick, but I'm glad your writings from even 8 years ago are getting the attention they deserve!

So sorry you're feeling crappy. I hope you get past those unmentioned (thank you!) details soon.

I'll head over to read. Last time The Herald would not accept my sign in for commenting.. maybe this time. I'm so glad they recognize and appreciate the great writer that is you.

I am fed up with being around someone clearing their throat constanty and telling me it's just ALLERGIES. I've caught more "allergies" than I care to count and now avoid these particular people.

It starts in my head and goes into bronchitis. After their "allergies" get better, I'm still batting the lung congestion for weeks.

When I feel bad, I stay home. They don't.

Isn't it amazing how our early experiences with family can shape our love for a sport? I had similar experiences with my Aunt and hockey (of course the Bruins specifically). Her enthusiasm for the game and patience answering my questions helped me grow into a fan and gave us something we bonded over and enjoy doing together to this day. Great story, very touching!

Sadly I can't seem to log in to leave my comment over on the original article but wanted to let you know I'm keeping up with your writing. Kudos on the most recent byline!
