I'm extremely allergic to bee and wasp bites so I don't know how long I could keep my cool with them hovering about me!!!!!
Thanks for providing the material for tonight's nightmare
I went there and saw bugs. BIG bugs. Now I have the jeebie heebies and worst of all, I couldn't read your story because of the pictures of bugs.
I'm with Connie/Mom -- a wasp sting put me in the hospital for a few days when I was 16 (anaphylactic shock -- I was passed out within 10 minutes or so)... but I coulda used a few trillion of those guys one year when I drove down to Nashville -- it was a 17-year-cicada year, and the cicadas were out in force all through the lower mid-Atlantic region. I kept hearing this buzz/whining noise as I was driving down I-81. I'd think, "Is something wrong with the car?" I'd pull over, shut off the engine... and the sound was still there -- it wasn't my car, it was the cicadas! I'd start up again, get back on the road... and awhile later, would again become convinced that the car was making some kind of sound.... I'd stop again... Nope, still just the insects! Start, drive, repeat!
I reckon peeps should go read - it is fascinating. And now I know they won't sting me, I can look and read.
Now I am googling cicada, although urbie's comment gives me a clue... :)
Not sure I could let one hover around within a foot of me without a reaction to whack it or swat at it. The pictures alone creep me out !

Chowderhead! I love it! Thanks for sharing. (I got here via oodlesoffunch, BTW)
The first time I saw one of these suckers, I had lived in the Mid-Atlantic area for about 8 years...When they come of a 17 year hibernation I thought what the F**K? Ugly, scary, and of no use to man..
One of my dogs, Ellie-Ma,e would just pounce, kill, and eat.....Trip to the vet as these big F***ers are too much protein for dogs. I hate them!
Carpenter Bees do the same thing, fly right up and look at you. It's funny watching them fight with each other.
Very interesting. Hhm. I don't think we have those in Socal. I we do I've never seen one. Thanks for being so informative.
Just found a cicada nest in our backyard, YIKES!!!! Ugly little critter! Apparently we aren't suppose to kill it, they'll be gone before we know it! (I hope so!)
