It really is one of the best things you've ever written.

Every year we all rush around looking for "perfect presents" that are often expensive, or the latest toy or game, or the right brand name. And every year somebody finds the "perfect present" that didn't cost much money but came from the heart. Those ones are pricesless.

I hope you have an amazing Christmas with your family... here's to many perfect presents - both given and received.

God bless & Merry Christmas!Melindahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17991977217122899608noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15329973.post-216499095696808052006-12-21T13:16:00.000-05:002006-12-21T13:16:00.000-05:00Thank you, all, for receiving this story (for a se...Thank you, all, for receiving this story (for a second time, for some of you) so lovingly.

My Auntie Ba was one of the most empathetic souls who ever lived. This sometimes got her in trouble. She attracted the less fortunate (and many times, the less-than-honest) as though they were iron and she was magnetized.

She rarely said, "No", even to outlandish requests that she absolutely had to know were not even remotely in her best interest. Even if it meant that she'd be naked in the freezing rain, she'd give you the shirt off of her back.

And I suppose the nicest thing I could say about her is that I don't ever recall her saying or doing anything that would have knowingly hurt another person's feelings. She wasn't a saint - she smoked, said some cusses, did one or two minor things outside of the law - but in her emotional dealings with others she was exemplary and someone I try very hard to emulate. I mostly fail, but I try.

Again, thanks to you all, and Merry Christmas!Suldoghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07778845367184916684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15329973.post-88504965858489607832006-12-21T11:38:00.000-05:002006-12-21T11:38:00.000-05:00I read this story when I first came across your bl...I read this story when I first came across your blog. I believe that I must have been one of the infants (along with Joey) being that it was 1965.

Auntie Ba came to my house in Hyde Park the year after my parents divorced and brought gifts, which must have been tough for her with all of the animosity that had built up with the divorce. Most people would not have bothered making an effort, but she did. She had sent a letter to my mother in 1985 after reading in the Globe obits that my Grandma Norton had died. In that letter she expressed regret for not keeping in contact, but my old man had lied to her about our whereabouts. Those things were never lost on me and reading this story enforces what I've always felt about her.

I recently came across a telegram sent to me on my first Christmas from Uncle Jimmy....talk about blast from the past..41 years ago.

Merry Christmas!!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15329973.post-16404969893704647442006-12-21T11:15:00.000-05:002006-12-21T11:15:00.000-05:00I have tears in my eyes as I type this comment, so...I have tears in my eyes as I type this comment, so forgive any typos.

How very beautiful, and so intimate and detailed.
