Some Thoughts On Consumerism

Mostly concerning Thanksgiving, of course, because Thanksgiving Comes First..

If you'll head on over to the Boston Herald website, you'll find my latest column. I hope you agree. If not... well, at least you came here to say "Hi!", so I can't be too mad at you.

Leaving a swell comment at the website would be nice. A letter to the editor would be even better. Of course, anyone who buys a hard copy of the paper and saves it until my Pulitzer Prize ceremony (sometime around 2029, I think) will gain free admittance upon presentation of same at the door. There will be FREE turnips for all in attendance, so it's a wise investment.

Soon, with more (probably better) stuff.

Black Friday Death Count wbsite? Really? Unbelievable!
As you know, Canadian Thanksgiving is long past, but the idea of Black Friday sales is creeping into some of the bigger box stores here. I definitely won't be participating, and I'm assuming you won't either! Great article. Tell it like it is, Jim!

Well... I started a comment over there, but the Herald kicked me out before I could finish.

I always joke about it when asked if I'll be shopping. Not just no but HELL no. I wouldn't save enough money to pay for my bail.

With my anxiety/panic disorder, it would not be a fun experience anyway. I agree with you. It's appalling to be that greedy.

My son is one of the lucky people who has to work on Thanksgiving. I'm glad he and his wife will be eating dinner with us after, though.

Thank heaven the baker i work for is closed on Thanksgiving. If you want one of our cakes, you have to come get it the day before!

I saw this Jimmy Kimmel episode today which talks about this very same madness. I wonder what you thought about it. He was talking about a store which is thinking of doing these Black Friday Sale on Wednesday!

"If you’re one of the shoppers who actively takes part in this yearly greedfest, there is nothing you can say that will make me view you as anything more than a human cockroach skittering across the parking lot toward a store in search of your equivalent of food crumbs."

Good analogy. And I agree - the retailers who pull their employees away from their families so they don't turn any cockroaches away are even worse. Exchanging human dignity and decency for one more nickel is despicable. Scrooge comes to mind; know where we can find a few good ghosts for hire?

I want to send out a big "Thank You!" to all who shared my piece. I see, from the Herald website, that it was shared some 120+ times on Facebook, a record for one of my columns. What a pleasant surprise!

Firstly, the big box store I shop at is closed on Thanksgiving. Kudos to Costco.
Secondly, I have NEVER shopped on Thanksgiving. I did hear that one of our malls was going to be open from 6am to 8? or 9? It doesn't really matter, but I hope they paid everyone double and hardly had any customers.
I have heard that "Black Friday" is not at all what it used to be, what with retailers starting the sales even weeks before the actual day, thereby diluting the masses from flocking out to the stores to buy gifts. I did go to Target once on Black Friday to buy me Mum a Kindle for Christmas one year, but other than that, I usually spend Friday trying to figure out recipes for left over turkey.....
