For One Who Needs It

I have a column in the Boston Herald today. It may not be what you've come to expect. It doesn't contain any jokes. I wrote it to help someone get through a rough patch.

Boston Herald

If you know someone who might like to read my story today - maybe someone who will get a little strength from it - I sure would appreciate you passing it along.

Soon.

You mean, of course, someone who wants to change.

I really admire that you have succeeded.
But to do that you really had to want it and to have all of those other things fall into place as well.

Yeah, and your stuff doesn't get much better.

Exactly, Skip. All the pressure from outside will not change a person from within. There has to be a desire of some sort, even if just a spark that might be fanned into a flame with love and patience.

You're a good man, Sully. . .

I'm a man, Craig.

(Damn. That was good. I love being humble and a braggart at the same time. It fits me.)

i hope whoever this was written for/to is ready to like themselves enough to take that first step

They have. This was to maybe give them a little strength to keep going.

A couple of times you told me you loved me Jim - not in the way some do of course - Jim I love you too! You have such a big heart and you do a lot of good in this world and I believe God pit you where you are at the Boston Herald so you can reach people like this . . . :)

You're a nice guy, Eddie, and I thank you for the kind thoughts, but I'm just sort of muddling through everything same as everybody else. I hope it accomplishes some good.

May those words reach far and wide. Bless you, and God bless the glass-shard laden path found yourself on that lead you to this place today. Thank you for your courage to share your story.

One of your best stories there. If more people see and read it, perhaps it can sink in that there is hope for them.

CLR - I appreciate the kind words, but I don't think 'courage' has much to do with it. It's just fact, and I felt sharing it publicly might make a difference for someone.

Michelle - Thank you! Exactly. Nothing makes me sadder than someone giving up hope. If I can help that not to happen for anyone, I'm blessed.

Your roots helped you to make it through, Jim. I am thankful that you not only have those strong roots but also the willingness to make the changes you needed to make. I pray that the person that you are thinking of as you penned this not only has the determination to change, but will also reach out to help others as you have done. Faith, hope, and love....all are necessary as we face each day.

Uncle Skip has it right, you have to REALLY REALLY WANT to change before any success is possible... not only with hard drugs, but with stopping smoking, drinking too much, eating the wrong food, biting your nails, whatever...
And you did it, with help from your dad and your future wife and friends and family, but YOU did it.
And now I hope this BH article will help others in similar situations.

sorry, had to delete, the comment posted twice. Silly Blogger.

Jackie, Shammickite - Thanks. I try not to overstate the will power involved. If I still had cash, I would have still done some more. I like to think I would have reached the point of quitting anyway, but I might have killed myself inadvertently before then.

The Divine had more than a little to do with it., too :-)

I suspect your article will help more than your loved one. May he/she find the strength that you did.

Love it. (The message, not the subject) Addiction is so hard, on so many levels, what a great way to show them your support.

i hope this helped tip the scales in favor of sobriety.
