Sully's Corner

I write a semi-regular feature over at the M Street Softball League website. It's called Sully's Corner. I take a few hundred words to describe recent happenings in the league or something interesting about softball that tickled my fancy.

This week, I wrote about the state championships which were held at M Street Park last weekend. If you feel you aren't getting enough softball here, hop over there and get your fix.

If you've had more than enough softball, take heart. I promise you something non-softball on Friday.

Until then, keep your eye on the ball, clear your hips, and follow through.

Soon, with less batter stuff.

Jim, I'd comment but I know so little about softball. I know it's not played with a hard ball, right? And it's played with a ball. Now question is, do you play it with a bat? I'd better check your post and find out. I think you'll agree that blogging opens your eyesto the vast ocean of ignorance that most of the human race is drowning in.

Buck, Jenny, Daft:

A few quick answers - First, the game is very similar to baseball. It is played with a bat. The ball is not actually soft; that is a misnomer. It is 'soft' only in comparison to a 'hardball' or baseball. Getting hit with it will hurt just about as much as getting hit with a baseball, for instance. OK, as for 'clearing the hips', that is something a batter (the person trying to hit the ball) must do in order to generate power. It means 'opening' the hips before bringing the arms around in your swing.

This is a case of 'do as I say, not as I do' because I never learned this as a kid and I don't hit for power. I am almost all arms and no lower body when I hit, and thus I am a guy who hits singles rather than home runs. Power hitters get the big bucks, though, so I was trying to impart wisdom that might pay down the road :-)

I can't get there either.
I'm guessing it's because whatever it is you wrote is so popular there is no more room to get in.

Where are the archives for Sully's Corner...just curious. I know I've read another besides this one, and I am hoping that your articles are archived.
Always a nice job, Jim.

I'm sorta proud of the fact that I knew what clear your hips meant. Some of my misspent youth at the ballpark remains with me. water damage Boston MA

And remember to duck when it seems too close for comfort...Some people (not me) forget to duck paying too close an attention to the ball and then get hit on their noses (for people who have more than one).

Okay, is that dude's legal name "Pat Pickup?" He should be a character in Disney's "Cars".
