You Can Grow Ideas In The Garden Of Your Mind

Yesterday, it was a speech that told young people You Are Not Special (even though the actual thought was that they are special; you have to read it.) Today, something new from the man who told everyone that they were special - Mister Rogers.

The musical style may not be everyone's favorite, but I think this is a brilliant piece of work. Enjoy!

(I thank Lime for bringing this to my attention. It made my morning.)

The Overlord loved it! She clapped her hands (actually, she grabbed my hands and clapped them together-but you get the idea).

I love it! Thanks!

I really hope Mister Rogers and Dr. Seuss can sit down together over a beer (or, you know, a convivial beverage of their choice). . .

I love this; I love him...always have. I read this after searching where his sweater is (Smithsonian, Washington, D.C.)...and wanted to share it here. I hope you don't mind.
Hugs,
Jackie

During the 1997 Daytime Emmys, the Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Rogers. The following is an excerpt from Esquire's coverage of the gala, written by Tom Junod:

Mister Rogers went onstage to accept the award — and there, in front of all the soap opera stars and talk show sinceratrons, in front of all the jutting man-tanned jaws and jutting saltwater bosoms, he made his small bow and said into the microphone, "All of us have special ones who have loved us into being. Would you just take, along with me, ten seconds to think of the people who have helped you become who you are. Ten seconds of silence."
And then he lifted his wrist, looked at the audience, looked at his watch, and said, "I'll watch the time." There was, at first, a small whoop from the crowd, a giddy, strangled hiccup of laughter, as people realized that he wasn't kidding, that Mister Rogers was not some convenient eunuch, but rather a man, an authority figure who actually expected them to do what he asked. And so they did. One second, two seconds, three seconds — and now the jaws clenched, and the bosoms heaved, and the mascara ran, and the tears fell upon the beglittered gathering like rain leaking down a crystal chandelier. And Mister Rogers finally looked up from his watch and said softly "May God be with you."

A wonderful man and an inspirational teacher. I wish he was still around as an antidote to our cynical times.

It's really strange.
I never went of my way to watch Fred Rogers.
But, when the show was being watched by others, he always captured my attention and I learned something.

Well, I don't feel so special -all I got was a "Yup" and I don't know what it was for -are you agreeing with the left nut? the right one? the twig? One of the comments? (I am impotent with frustration, you have left me limp :(

He was truly a good soul. This was a good reminder.

Oh, I love it! I think this was going around Facebook but I never took time to watch it. Thanks for posting it here (if it's here, I know it's worth watching, but then I should have known that anyway since it was Fred.)

This was great. Thanks. Mr. Rogers was a daily event on weekdays in my home when my kids were growing up. I was just as entertained as my children. =:]

Thank you Jackie for sharing your part here too.

Ha! That's pretty cool. Although, I'm not sure Auto-tuned remixed Mister Rogers is considered a "musical style."

I watched when I was a kid, and to this day I call people who wear too much makeup "Lady Elaine". I also say "Correct as usual King Friday."

I'm often disappointed that nobody knows what I'm talking about.

I would have very much liked to have known him.

It's a wonderful piece. Frank sent it to me saying that he bet you'd like it. I'm glad I stopped by here before sending it.

I've been familiar with and quite taken with the We Are All Connected video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGK84Poeynk&feature=player_embedded

Mr. Rogers - what a great subject for this new one.
