Fighting Out Of The Blue Corner, At 187 Pounds...

One of the things I've had to do on occasion, as a voice artist, is audition for a client. This is a relatively painless procedure - until they tell me that I'm not right for the part, at which point I break down in tears and contemplate suicide.

Just kidding. If there's one thing you need, as a performer of any sort, it's thick skin. If you can't take rejection - and sometimes for no apparent objective reason - you'll wind up as a basket case. I'm not saying that I'm utterly immune to criticism, but I've certainly had to become more so since entering this business.

Recently, a Marketing Messages client, RINGSIDE, placed an order for some new voice prompts.

(I think that may be a personal best for links in one sentence.)

RINGSIDE sells equipment for boxing and other combat sports. When they placed the order, they were leaning toward another talent on our roster. He wasn't a bad choice, but I've been a fight fan for many years, and my Dad was a boxer while in the navy and had a handful of professional fights afterward, so my doing some work for this boxing-related firm was something I really desired. And, aside from any personal considerations, I felt that my voice was perfect for the gig - a strong male voice, low baritone/upper bass register. Thus, I asked if I might be considered for the work rather than the other fellow.

(I feel I should point out that this wasn't a case of my undercutting another talent for personal gain. My getting the job would not affect my monetary situation. I'm on-staff at MM, and there would be no extra income accruing to me. I wanted the job for personal reasons only.)

So, in order to give the client an idea of how well I could perform for them, I sent them a demo of myself reading one of their telephone greetings. Two demos, actually. I gave them a read in what would be considered my normal delivery and then one in a bit more of an upbeat style. Here are the two now, if you'd like to listen to them yourself.

Sample #1 - Normal

Sample #2 - Upbeat

And I'm happy to report that I was not reduced to tears and made to contemplate suicide in this instance. After listening to my demos, they chose me to do their work!

(Which read did you like? They preferred the upbeat read, so I did all of their prompts in that style.)

See you soon.

I like the normal one. Damn, you sound like you *are* ringside :))

I'll vote for #2, the Upbeat Mode. I would also like for you to do the voice-over on my blogs. You are 10x better than Odiogo's computer voice!

Such dulcet tones, my friend.

I liked the normal also. The inhanced sounded fake. But then, no accounting for taste.

Speak on.

Damn you give good voice!

Mr. Jazz does the same thing you do - he's the voice of Hydro-Quebec actually.

Beautiful voice, Jim! I'll take #2... upbeat.

congrats! how fun that you got to do a job that was personally meaningful to you. i can hear why they opted for the upbeat demo, but there's a certain laid back quality to other first one that i like. of course, i'm not trying to generate sales or anything like that though.

I like "normal," which is a first-ever for me. I almost NEVER, EVER, do normal. But in this case... ;-)

Upbeat. But I looooooooove how sexy your voice is in the first one.

You have a very rich voice! I can see why you are successful in your occupation. Nice to listen to.

How interesting to hear a blogger's voice. Now I have one in my head for your words and it shall always play that way. Adds a new demension to your posts, which are already very enjoyable.

I liked both but maybe the second a tiny bit better.

I can't decide. Normal seems appropriate, but upbaet is different. I would be a terrible client, at least concerning this profession...

I enjoy that they picked the upbeat voice for a product used to hit other people in the head.

Congrats on getting a job that has meaning for you. Very cool. I prefer the first, normal one. You could probably read the phone book and make it sound good though. :)

Wise move on Janine's part. ;)

#2 is best. It drives the energy and hits the key words just right. Well done!

Great set of pipes, my man. Personally I liked #1, but also understand why a company that sells equipment to ellicit concussions would opt for "upbeat."

Have you considered reading for female phone sex lines?

hey! thanks for stopping by my blog.

p.s. i agree with sniffles, you have a face for radio.

aw, snap!

I actually enjoyed the first one. You have an awesome voice; one that makes me want to trust whatever you are selling or saying. Weird.

I vote for #2, the upbeat.
It's great hearing your voice you know. I am now confident that you could never get away. I would know that voice anywhere, upbeat or otherwise.
Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Hmm, both are good. I listened to the normal one first though & have to say after hearing the upbeat one the first sounds a little more morose. Maybe that's the wrong word. It sounds like you're reading a script even though it flows (I guess is a more fitting description). The upbeat version is more off the cuff sounding, less staunchy business.

Jenn said...

Oh & of course kudos on landing such a personally satisfying gig, that really rocks :)

Sujatha said...

I like both versions, but I love your voice! It's awesome!

I liked them both, but the upbeat beat out the normal by a silly little decibel!

congratulations! (also, i'm quite impressed about the comment above the comment box.)

lol - i agree with ed - it's funny that they went upbeat for fight gear.

i've got your voice saying "let's get ready to rumble" stuck in my head. it displaced that new eminiem song, so thanks!

always upbeat always

How I loved your rolling 'R's. English speakers miss out on them. Wish you did some of our boring automated phone stuff for a few Brit firms. Your voice could sell chocolate to Cadburys! No. 1 is best.

I personally like #1. But I also liked #2. But #1 would be my choce if I had to campare #1 against #2, But #1 is clearly the winner when compared to #2, but other than #1 or #2 it definetly would be #1. I think.

MVD asks - "Have you considered reading for female phone sex lines?"

Ah, my dream job! Alas, I think one of the reasons MY WIFE married me was so that she could be the only one I talk dirty to.

George said...

I'll take Upbeat for a thousand, Alex!

Actually, I like them both. You're very good. Found you over on Blunt Delivery and thought I'd pop over for a visit.

Pat - Arkansas said...

That's some voice you've got there, Suldog!:) I prefer #1 clip. Too much excitement isn't good for my heart! LOL

Chuck said...

I thought #1 sounded a little more...I don't know, authentic? But I thought they both sounded fine, and there wasn't an extreme difference between them. So if they want perky and upbeat, let 'em have it.

Moannie said...

The normal one, what a great deep brown voice, lucky lady wife. Now if JP had THAT voice to go with his accent.....!

Nana Net said...

I just can not pick one! I like them both. Sort of like Lays Potato Chips~~~ You can not eat just one! In this case pick just one!!!!!! LOL

Sniffles and Smiles said...

Ah, Suldog/Jim...you are priceless...I love your sense of humor!!!! And yes, you have succeeded in thoroughly scaring me off ...LOL!

Snowbrush said...

I'll got with #1. #2 sounds too caffeinated.

Gennasus said...

Well done on getting the job.

I'd go for number 1, I think it sounds more genuine. Maybe that's down to my repressed Britishness. I'm not good at doing excitement.....unless it involves a dog.

The Things We Carried said...

Honestly, I like the first the best. your writing voice matches your speaking voice. Nice!

Woman in a Window said...

Dargh! I can't hear you Suldog! It's not working. I will say congratulations though.

Catmoves said...

Depending on the ad itself, they'll probably wind up using both. Great job.

Theresa said...

Wow! You have a great voice. I liked them both but the "normal" one was a wee bit better. Congrats for getting the gig. Way to go!

'Upbeat' sounds like boxing terminology to me, so it would be the logical choice. But. Somehow I think. That the dots. Were in the wrong place. When you read. The text. Love your voice though. Who cares where the dots are ;-)
