(This is just a generic photo of some snow. Actual photos of today's snow come later, if you care.)
When it snows around here, everybody blogs about it. This morning, I was thinking, "Man, that's so boring! I'll blog about something else. Who the hell wants to read another snow blog?"
Then, I got to thinking about it. Maybe it's a big kick for people who live in Hawaii or Florida or Australia or Vienna to read about snow. Those places don't get near as much of the stuff as we do here in the Boston area. And, since I have readers in those places, I'd be doing them a disservice if I didn't relate the details, telling them all about my wonderful adventures in the white stuff.
So, if you come from one of those places, enjoy the following. If you come from, say, Canada, feel free to ignore it.
You may remember what happened to me the last time it snowed. Well, today it is snowing again; the first snowfall of any magnitude since that time. As I write, we have about six inches accumulated and it is still falling.
Thus far, I am the only one to have made it into work. I'm hoping that my boss calls any moment now and says, "Jim! What in heck are you doing there? Go home!"
(I'm also hoping to poop $100 bills the next time I have to go, but I'm not counting on it.)
Update: My production partner, Dan, just called. He's going to work from home. I don't blame him. His commute is from Worcester, and he lives on a hill. Everybody in Worcester lives on a hill. Anyway, his street is very steep and leads directly into a feeder of Interstate 90, the Massachusetts Turnpike. He takes his life in his hands if he tries to negotiate that hill before it's plowed.
Update: Kim, our office manager, just arrived. The first words out of her mouth? "This sucks!" I can't argue with that.
Update: My boss just showed up. Looks like I'm here for the duration.
Oh, well. Since I've got little else of interest to write about, here are some quick snaps of our building and parking lot.

This is the front of our building. As I took this, a fellow with a snowblower was just beginning to make his way down the walk, clearing it.

This is my car, "Roddy". He is the world's greatest snow car, despite how he got stuck in the previous story. That was my fault, not his.

And here's the view of the other side of the building. Beyond that big tree is a cemetery, which is always fun to look at whenever I come outside for a smoke.
My camera ran out of power just after I snapped that last one, so you've been spared any further shots. And that's about all I've got until tomorrow. See you then.

Oh Sully...thats so not a lot of snow! Come north ward my friend and we will show you some snow!LOL
Actually, we have had a January thaw and now about half of our accumulation (or more) is melted off, ready to be covered again by today's expected couple of inches.
Yours sure is pretty though!
dang, we are supposed to lok like that today but the snow bypassed us and all went north....sigh....maybe next time.
I haven't seen real snow in years!
It gets cold enough down here, but we just don't get any precipitation, especially with our "drought" going on.
Hehe, I was just thinking about that today. Got up, looked outside the window and told myself 'I am soooooooooooo not going to blog about more stupid snow'. But now maybe I will ^^
I enjoyed the links to your other snow stories, we have had so many similar ones. So why do we live in New England???
Or maybe not, I have never been known for my consistency.
I'll ponder it while I make tea and study go,
Karen
alip - I said if you come from Canada you should ignore it :-)
I don't know that the photos show very well that it was still falling. Since those photos (about two hours ago, as I write this) we've had another 1-2 inches, and it's still coming.
lime - Lucky you!
johnny - see above reply.
Karen - Hey, you read mine, I'll read yours.
75˚ and sunny is the prediction for my town, so, um, good luck with the snow.
I live in the northeast for many years. No, I do not miss the snow and ice and shoveling and scraping and sliding.
I want a blog essay on your building. It looks both boring and interesting at the same time.
I also want an egg and cheese sandwich, so I may walk over to the deli later. But I may not.
Stu - My building is distinctive for only one thing, really. It is similar in style to the slew of Catholic parochial schools built in this area in the 50's & 60's. Same color bricks, same low-slung institutional style. I have little doubt that it was built by the same contractors, and that the reason for this style was the inexpensiveness of the materials.
However, you've picqued my curiosity about those buildings. I may try to discover concrete reasons concerning their erection, in this style, in such abundance.
I'm a reporter with the Boston Globe, writing about the storm today. Sully, I'd appreciate if you could give me a call or anyone else with stories about the storm or telecommuting. Thanks, David Abel --617-929-8511
Wifey of your production partner here...yes, we have snow on our hill. And wind, lots of wind today. Must say I was happy to have Dan home considering when he takes off on his bike in weather like this my heart stops. Ahh, but remember when he used to bike in ALL weather? I'll admit that I'm also glad he's home today b/c I don't think I could have handled my own work (some for your ears, btw), shoveling and juggling two babies all at the same time. Really, you need to have three babies to make the juggling look impressive! I should have come into your office today instead ;).
It's cold here today, but nothing like that...although I wish it was!
I miss the snow...I hate Al Gore!
Mandy - I think that shoveling while concurrently juggling two kids AND doing voice work is worth a medal of some sort. And, yes, your husband is slightly less insane now than he used to be.
Mushy - I'm not overly fond of ol' Al, either, but it doesn't have anything to do with the weather. Actually, I suppose I'm more pissed at his wife than I am him. Tipper was the one who tried to knock the First Amendment's teeth out vis-a-vis musical recordings. But, if he wasn't an elected official at the time, she would have had no platform to bleat from, so it was really HIS fault.
I like the snow and Al Gore. Today is beautiful and traveling is pretty easy at this point (1:00pm). As for Al, I'm just a typical left wing radical from Cambridge, MA; aka "The Peoples Rebublic of Cambridge". Anyway, I like people to the left of Al more than him, but none as much as I like snow!
I'd fully expected to wake up and find snow like this piled up outside but, alas, nothing. Damn false alarm NY snow!
I visited Worcester back in 1996 during perhaps the words snow in recent memory (at least mine). And everytime we told people we were from New York, they'd almost always say: "Whoa, New Yorrrk" as if I was Marvin the Martian.
I'll never forget how it felt walking outside in the middle of the street at 2am in the morning.
Before this tangent takes me to a foreign land, I'll stop.
Stay warm, Jim!
There is nothing worse than being stuck at work when you had a perfect excuse to stay home ;)
After just a year in the UK (where I barely saw snow at all), I've rekindled my love of the white stuff - except when digging a foot and a half of it from the driveway. It might be cold (and often annoying), but it's awfully pretty!
Now's the time to cozy up with a hot beverage and be thankful that Roddy's not stuck in another wall of snow :)
I love the snow, I just don't care to drive on ice. The snow looks very pretty, around here we've had hardly any snow.
I blogged about the impending snow too yesterday. It just seemed like the right thing to do. Nice pictures!
Gee and to think.... I was walking my dog yesterday with a short sleeve shirt. Gad, this Florida is horrible... :)
hope you don't get snowed in at work. that would not be fun. much better to get snowed in at home.
my son just wandered by the computer and said "i like that car" (referring to roddy). "why is it covered in snow?" the poor kid has never seen the stuff in person--it's on our list of things to expose him to this winter. so basically, snow is not a boring topic to those of us in sunny places. if it makes you feel any better, we are shivering around here today--even though the sun is out, it's only 50 degrees--quite cold by california standards.
good luck getting home today!
